In 1842, following the end of the SEMINOLE war, a few families crossed over to the southern banks of the Manatee River and established the settlement of Manatee Village. After gathering for worship and study in their homes and receiving the visits from Methodist "Circuit Riding" preachers. MANATEE METHODIST CHURCH was organized and chartered (1849). MANATEE METHODIST was the first Protestant church established South of TAMPA BAY on the Gulf Coast. It's meeting house was built in 1850 adjacent to a burying ground. During the week the building served as a school. Missionaries of several denominations preached there over a period of 16 years. In 1866 the Courthouse (built in 1860) was sold at auction (for $128) to the METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH SOUTH. A steeple and small bell were added and the METHODISTS finally had their own house of worship. Subsequent years saw many additions and changes to the original building. Continued growth fostered the need for a new, larger, more modern building. Our current building was erected and dedicated in 1975.

We are a historically rich church, established in 1849, and was the first church south of the river. While we have celebrated 172 Years we have a strong vision for the future. We seek not to be a museum, but a hospital for the least, last and lost of society. So if you feel like you don't fit anyplace else our doors and our hearts are open to welcome you into God's family. The driving force behind all we do is to Give God the Glory as we introduce you to Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord.
Our worship is warm and our music is a blend of favorite hymns, contemporary melodies, and special music featuring our lead Soloist, Stephanie Waiters, and her group "Sisters Of The Gospel".

WHAT WE BELIEVE
We believe that the core of our Christian faith is influenced and developed through four principles: Reason and experience. (1) Our faith begins and ends with Scripture which reveals God's truth for the living out of our days; (2) Tradition is the collective wisdom of our forefathers and mothers as they studied God's Word and put it into practice; (3) Reason grows out of the fact that God has given each of us a brain and he expects us to use it; and (4) Experience -- each of us experience different at different stages of life and those experiences plays a rich role in helping us buildup our faith.
Today, the Manatee County Historical Commission, Inc. serves to preserve these historic structures for the future.
